Chevening Scholarship 2024-2025

Chevening Scholarship is the UK government’s international scholarships and fellowships programme.

Funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations, they offer individuals who show potential to inspire, inform, and influence positive change the opportunity to study at a UK university to gain a UK educational qualification.

Chevening Scholars study subjects in almost any field, and go on to implement their ideas for positive change in a range of sectors. After completing their period of study in the UK, they return home and join our global network of over 50,000 alumni.

Chevening Scholarships enable outstanding emerging leaders from all over the world to pursue one-year master’s degrees in the UK. Whilst there is no ‘typical’ Chevening Scholar, they are looking for the kind of people who have the passion, ideas, and influence to provide the solutions and leadership needed to create a better future.

Because these scholarships are fully-funded (flights, accommodation, and course fees are all included), you are free to focus on achieving your professional goals and maximising the experience of a lifetime. You will live and study in the UK for a year, during which time you will develop professionally and academically, network extensively, experience UK culture, and build lasting positive relationships with the UK. On completing your studies, you will leave the UK equipped with the knowledge and networks necessary to bring your own ideas to life.

Chevening Scholarship | Chevening’s objectives:

The mission of the Chevening Scholarship programme is to support UK foreign policy priorities and achieve FCDO objectives by creating lasting positive relationships with future leaders, influencers, and decision-makers.

Chevening grants awards to individuals with outstanding leadership and influencing skills from around the world, to enable them to experience a period of study in the UK. The programme supports awardees from more than 160 countries and territories with the main exceptions being the USA (whose citizens can apply for FCDO-funded Marshall Scholarships) and the majority of the European Union.

The Chevening Scholarship programme began in 1983 and has developed into a prestigious and highly competitive international awards programme. Its success has led to an increased level of investment, with over 1,500 awards made most years.

Chevening Scholarship | Funding:

The Chevening Scholarship Programme includes a tailored engagement programme creating opportunities for scholars to network with each other as well as alumni, the FCDO, high profile speakers and partner organisations. Award recipients receive:

• Payment of tuition fees
• Economy travel to and from your country of residence by an approved route for you only
• An arrival allowance
• The cost of an entry clearance (visa) application for you only
• A departure allowance
• A contribution of up to £75 for TB testing, where this is required
• A travel top up allowance
• A monthly personal living allowance (stipend) to cover accommodation and living expenses. The monthly stipend will depend on whether you are studying inside or outside London. These rates are subject to annual review.

Chevening Scholarship | Eligibility:

Ineligible applications will be rejected, so it is important that you check that you meet our eligibility criteria before you start your application.

To be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship you must:

• Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory.
• Return to your country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after your award has ended.
• Have completed all components of an undergraduate degree that will enable you to gain entry onto a postgraduate programme at a UK university by the time you submit your application. This is typically equivalent to an upper second-class 2:1 honours degree in the UK but may be different depending on your course and university choice.
• Have at least two years (equivalent to 2,800 hours) of work experience.
• Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and have received an unconditional offer from one of these choices by 13 July 2024.

You are not eligible for a Chevening Scholarship if you:

• Hold British or dual British citizenship (unless you are a citizen of a British Overseas Territory or hold BN(O) and are applying from Hong Kong).
• Hold refugee status in a non-Chevening eligible country. Applicants who are citizens of a Chevening-eligible country and who hold refugee status in a Chevening-eligible country are eligible for a scholarship.
• Are an employee, a former employee, or relative* of an employee of Her Majesty’s Government, or have been within the last two years from the opening of Chevening applications  (including the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, all British Embassies/High Commissions, the Home Office, the Ministry of Defence, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the Department for International Trade and the UKVI), the British Council, a sponsoring UK university, or a staff member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.
• Employees, former employees, or relatives* of an employee of Chevening Partner organisations are eligible to apply, but if the employment took place within the last two years, you cannot receive a Chevening Partner Award from the organisation from which you work, previously worked, or are affiliated with through relatives.
• Have previously studied in the UK with funding from a UK Government-funded scholarship.

Having a master’s degree does not prevent you from applying for a Chevening Award to study for a second master’s degree in the UK, as long as you can clearly explain why it will help you fulfil your career plan to influence positive change in your home country.

Once submitted, applications undergo an electronic sift against our eligibility criteria. Any applications deemed ineligible will be removed from the selection process. Please see the list of common errors here. If you make these errors in your application form, your application will be ineligible. Please note that once your application has been submitted, it is not possible to change it retrospectively.

Chevening Scholarship Application Timeline (2024/25)

• 6 August 2024: Applications open at 12:00 UTC.

  • Prospective applicants should review the application guidance and begin their applications through their respective country or territory pages.

• 5 November 2024: Application deadline at 11:59 UTC/GMT.

  • Applications must be submitted by this deadline (midday UK time).

• From 6 November 2024: Applications are sifted against eligibility criteria.

  • Applications will be reviewed to ensure they meet all Chevening eligibility requirements.

• Mid-November 2024 to January 2025: Reading committee assessments.

  • Independent reading committees assess eligible applications, providing scores and rankings that are forwarded to local British embassies/high commissions.

• Mid-February 2025: Applicants shortlisted for interviews.

  • Shortlisted candidates will be notified and invited to interviews. Preparations for the interviews are encouraged.

• 19 February 2025: Deadline for references and education documents.

  • Shortlisted candidates must submit two references and their educational documents by this date.

• 26 February to 25 April 2025: Interviews take place.

  • Interviews will be conducted by panels at British embassies and high commissions worldwide.

• From June 2025: Results announced.

  • Successful candidates will be notified of their selection as Chevening Scholars.

• 11 July 2025: Deadline to receive and submit at least one unconditional UK university offer by 17:00 BST.

• September/October 2025: Studies begin in the UK.

  • The 2025/2026 Chevening Scholars will commence their studies and join the global Chevening network.

Preparation is key to giving yourself the best chance of being awarded a fully funded Chevening Scholarship to study in the UK. To help you, we’ve collated our best guidance and advice.

It will enable you to:

Chevening Scholarship | Online Application System

1) Browser and Device Recommendation

• Use Google Chrome web browser for the best experience.
• Prefer using a laptop or PC over a mobile or tablet.

2) Application Form Window

• Work in a full-sized window to easily read the application form.

3) Navigation

• Avoid using the browser's 'back' and 'forward' buttons.
• Navigate through the application form using the provided menus.

4) Remember Your Login Details

• Save your username and password for easy access to the system.

5) Accurate Information Entry

• Ensure accurate contact details, especially a valid email address.
• Update your email address if it changes after submission.

6) Prepare Offline

• Consider preparing answers offline and then paste them into the form later to avoid loss of work.

7) Word Counts for Answers

• Answer all application questions with a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 500 words.
• Responses with less than 100 words will not be considered.

8) Save Regularly

• There is no automatic save function, so save your work regularly to avoid losing progress.
• Each session will close after 60 minutes, even if you're actively editing the form.

9) Multiple Sessions

• You can complete the form in multiple sessions.
• Use the 'Logout' button to exit and save your login details for future access.

10) Avoid Plagiarism

• Do not plagiarize content from other sources in your answers.
• Ensure originality and authenticity in your responses.

11) English Language Requirement

• All applications must be submitted in English.
• Applications not in English will be considered ineligible.

12) File Upload Requirements

• Check the size and format of files you upload (JPG/PNG/PDF).
• File size should not exceed 5MB, and file names should be under 50 characters.

13) Submitting the Application

• Only submit the application when you are fully satisfied with it.
• Once submitted, you can only modify contact details and upload documentation.

14) One Application Only

• You can only submit one application, and Chevening will only accept the first application.
• Withdrawal from the process requires providing a reason, and you can't start a new application until applications open again next year.

Chevening Scholarship | FAQs

Here are some frequently asked questions about the Chevening Scholarship:

1. I don’t have access to a Visa Application Centre, what do I do?

   • In such cases, Chevening may help cover the cost of travel to another country to secure a visa.
   • Visa travel cost reimbursement will be assessed and completed once the scholar arrives in the UK, which may take up to 2 months.
   • Please inform your PO (Program Officer) if you had to travel for a visa, and this will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

2. A course I applied for will not be running this year. Can I apply to another course instead?

   • In such a situation, you can apply for an alternative Chevening-eligible course.
   • After submitting your application, you cannot change your course choices in the online application system.
   • Keep a record of the discontinued course choice and inform your interviewers during your interview if you wish to change universities or courses.
   • Any university or course changes must be authorized by the interviewers, and you need to receive an unconditional offer from one of the authorized courses by the deadline.

3. What education documents do I need to upload with my Chevening application?

   • Applicants can upload either their degree certificate or degree transcript, as long as it is an official document from their university that proves their degree and grade.
   • The documents do not need to be translated into English.

4. I am coming with my family. Will Chevening pay for my dependents' quarantine?

   • Chevening will only pay for the scholar's quarantine costs.
   • Scholars can book quarantine packages for dependents via the travel company Diversity travel, but scholars are responsible for organizing and paying for this.
